Reinventar la artesanía

Hace poco leí la noticia de que un inventor español había conseguido fabricar una bombilla «eterna». Esto, que puede parecer un pequeño paso para el hombre…, como dijera aquel, no está exento de una intriga que parece salida de una antigua película en blanco y negro del año 1951, protagonizada por Alec Guinness y dirigida por Alexander Mackendrick. En ella, el inventor de una tela que nunca se mancha y nunca se desgasta, o taza, que dicen en mi pueblo, se enfrenta tanto a la industria fabricante como a los sindicatos en una estrambótica lucha por intentar sacar su fibra al mercado para no hablar de la lucha por su propia supervivencia. No entraré a analizar el trasfondo ideológico de la cinta, pero la similitud con la situación real es tal que da que pensar.

¿A qué viene todo esto?, os preguntaréis. Pues resulta que en el Smithsonian American Art Museum recientemente tuvo lugar una exposición que buscaba poner de manifiesto la sostenibilidad en el mundo del arte, lo que significa vivir de manera diferente en la sociedad moderna y el retorno a la valoración de lo hecho a mano. En ella se dieron cita 40 artistas que investigaban la noción de la artesanía con materiales tan diversos como la cerámica,el metal, el cristal, la piedra, y en ámbitos tan variados como la escultura, el diseño industrial, las instalaciones artísticas, el diseño de moda, la fabricación sostenible y las matemáticas. El objetivo era juntar a 40 artistas de menos de 40 años para celebrar el 40 aniversario de la Renwick Gallery, la sección de artesanía y artes de decorativas del Smithsonian American Art Museum. En ella se pudo ver a los «reinventores» que están cambiando la manera en que tradicionalmente se ha concebido la artesanía.Utilizando un lenguaje directo y exhaustivo, pretenden potenciar el valor de la creación de objetos, sin importar el modo en que se hagan. El énfasis, por tanto, se situaba en el proceso más que en el resultado final. De esta manera, el esfuerzo de los artistas se pone en primera plana y nos ayuda a cuestionarnos acerca de la extrema importancia que tendemos a darle hoy en día a la producción en masa de objetos repetidos.

Por desgracia ya no nos es posible acercarnos hasta Washington para deleitarnos con esta interesante exposición que cerró sus puertas el 3 de febrero. No obstante, sí podemos consolar nuestro malestar con la lectura de este completo manual que repasa la historia del movimiento artesanal: The Arts & Crafts Movement, de Oscar Lovell Triggs (en inglés). Si os resulta insuficiente, otra forma de consuelo a la que podemos aferrarnos es pensar que el inventor al que hacía referencia, con su audacia, ha conseguido romper con la tradición inventora española de añadir un palo a todo objeto que se cruce en su camino, si nunca lo habíais pensado, repasad la lista: fregona, Chupa Chups, futbolín, venencia (un vaso con un palo), banderillas, o incluso el cigarrillo, sin ir más lejos, que no deja de ser tabaco con forma de palo. Ahora bien, si todavía necesitáis consuelo para superar el mal sufrido por no haber podido asistir a esta exposición que yo tampoco pude contemplar, ya solo quedaría acudir al refranero popular…

Midlife-Crisis

Nicht einmal die Wechseljahre sind den Männern als rein weibliches Phänomen heilig. Die Midlife-Crisis, mittlerweile auch in Studien belegt, ist das männliche Pendant zu den Wechseljahren und der Menopause. Zwischen dem 40. und 55. Lebensjahr kann es passieren, dass er den sicheren Job an den Nagel hängt, um sich noch einmal selbst zu verwirklichen. Yogakurse und die jüngere Geliebte gehören ebenso zum neuen Alltag wie das Motorrad in der Garage, die neue Lederjacke oder die Haartönung.

Auch geht er jetzt wieder drei Mal die Woche joggen, trifft sich neuerdings auch unter der Woche wieder mit Freunden und versucht am Wochenende die Nacht zum Tag zu machen. Alles nur, um sein Bedürfnis nach jugendlichem Leichtsinn zu stillen.

Und an dieser Stelle muss ich zugeben: Ich habe mal wieder alles richtig gemacht und behaupte, dass mein Partner das Programm der Midlife-Crisis schon fast komplett auf seiner To-do-Liste abgehakt hat – und das vor dem 40.! Den doch recht gut bezahlten Job hat er zugunsten einer Selbstständigkeit geopfert, der Yogakurs liegt gefühlte 5 Jahre zurück, die Partnerin ist offiziell in den Endzwanzigern, die Lederjacke (wenn auch nicht das sportlichste Modell) existiert und auch das „Renature“ steht im Badschrank. Vielleicht geht er nicht 3 Mal die Woche joggen, aber bei schönem Wetter trifft man ihn schon des Öfteren im Park. Seine Freunde werden auch weiterhin unter der Woche nicht auf ihn verzichten müssen und am Wochenende wird die eine oder andere Nacht auch mal mit Kopfschmerzen bestraft. Was bisher nicht auf der Liste erscheint, ist – ganz zu meinem Leidwesen – das Motorrad, aber wir verhandeln gerade über eine zweite Schwalbe.

Ob nun die 30 für die Frau oder die 40 für den Mann als die erste größere Hürde erscheint, auch das Älterwerden ist alles eine Frage der Einstellung. Gegen die Wechseljahre und die Midlife-Crisis kann man sich nicht schützen, aber mit einer positiven Lebenseinstellung und ein wenig Kreativität definitiv wappnen.

Eine Ausstellung, die 40 Künstler vereinigt, die alle das Alter der Midlife-Crisis oder der Wechslenjahre noch nicht erreicht haben, zeigt das Smithsonian American Art Museum in der Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C. noch bis zum 3. Februar 2013 mit der Ausstellung 40 under 40: Craft Futures. Hitting the Big Four-Zero

For those of you out there currently under the age of 40 – what do you imagine your life to look like upon hitting the big 4-0? For those of you who have so far passed that age (congratulations!), are you where you expected to be at?

If someone were to ask me what my expectations or desires were about how my life would look at forty, I think I can honestly say that I have absolutely no idea. I’m not trying to use an easy cop-out, but I simply know that life has many surprises up its sleeve! For instance, my dreams of marrying Viggo Mortensen have not yet come into reality (hey – have you SEEN Lord of the Rings?! No judging!). However, I have been fortunate enough to travel extensively, and even live and work in a fair few different countries – which is definitely not what my eleven-year-old self would have envisioned for my  twenty-something self.

So, life is unpredictable. It is often strange. It is frequently absurd. It is equally delightful and sorrowful. But I like it. The mystery of what tomorrow will bring, or even what the next twenty years will bring, is something that I am looking forward to discovering. Hey, if life went exactly as planned, that wouldn’t be any fun, right?


Four Seasons

For the forty under-forties artists whose works are currently being displayed at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, I would bet that the majority could not foresee that they would one day have such a prestigious exhibit in their honour. The inspirational, impressive, and innovative work which is being displayed has been created since September 11^th, 2001, showing how both the artists and the world around them have evolved since that infamous day.

This made me ponder what my life will be like at 40. My challenge to you: Do something inspirational. Become the next artist under forty to be celebrated at a national gallery. Write the next big hit. Invent the next big invention. Train for the next Olympic Games. Win the next Olympic Games. Or, simply, make somebody smile. Help an old lady cross the road. Teach a child how to ride a bicycle. Big or small, do something that you can look back on when you are forty (or the next big -0 birthday) and be amazed. Go on, I dare you.
