Rad fads & turbulent times

We might all be able to agree that most of the world is a mess. The Americas and Europe have taken a ginormous step back in terms of production, innovation, and general flourishing. Many of our nations and states are in obscene debt which appears to be stagnant or rising and there is no end in sight.

Un amor de película

La historia del arte está llena de anécdotas que hoy entrarían sin problema en la crónica rosa de los programas de televisión más vistos de la hora de la siesta. Hay historias de amistad, odio, pasión, envidia, codicia y, cómo no, también amor. En esta última categoría, el arte moderno tiene pocas historias más de película que la que vivieron la pintora Georgia O’Keeffe y el fotógrafo Alfred Stieglitz.

Se enamoraron perdidamente después de conocerse en la galería de arte de vanguardia que Stieglitz regentaba en Nueva York, la mítica 291. Ella, que llegaría a ser la primera mujer en tener una retrospetiva en el MoMA, era entonces una desconocida.

Auch wenn sich die Künstlerin selbst nie zu ihren sexuellen und künstlerischen Präferenzen öffentlich äußerte, weil sie die Kunst für sich sprechen lassen wollte, erinnert man sich ihrer heute vor allem aufgrund ihrer detailliert-femininen Blumengemälde, die, nun ja, kaum eindeutige Gedanken zulassen.

La fotografía parece un arte reservado a la revista NationalGeographic o al concurso internacional más importante del mundo, el WorldPressPhoto. Sin embargo, hay muchos fotógrafos que han explorado las múltiples posibilidades de este invento relativamente moderno en relación con la pintura clásica. Desde comienzos del siglo XIX, cuando Daguerre inventó el daguerrotipo, algunos fotógrafos emplearon las tradiciones del arte pictórico, incluyendo a los grandes maestros, para explorar y justificar su arte.

A Searching Truth

Question for the day: What brings us to make particular choices? Choices which range from our music preferences to major life decisions?

Religion is one such important life choice. Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism… the Big 5 (in terms of the most well-known religions).

Weniger ist Mehr?

Michelangelo hat seine weltberühmte David-Skulptur aus einem einzigen Block Carrara-Marmor geschlagen. Als er gefragt wurde, wie er dabei vorgegangen sei, soll er geantwortet haben: „Ganz einfach: Ich habe alles weggeschlagen, was nicht David war.“

Das Überflüssige wegnehmen, möglichst alles auf das Wesentliche reduzieren: Dies scheint eine sinnvolle Empfehlung für viele Lebensbereiche zu sein, ganz egal ob es sich dabei um Schminke, den eigenen Satzbau oder die Innengestaltung des neuen Badezimmers handelt.

Doch wo beginnt überflüssiger Luxus und was ist ein nettes Extra? Wo fängt der Kitsch an und was ist ein Klassiker? Gerade im Zusammenhang mit Designobjekten stellt sich oft die Frage: Ist das nun Kunst oder kann das weg?

Locos... ¿o no tanto?

El siglo XX fue un siglo de reivindicaciones en todos los ámbitos. El arte, por supuesto, no se quedó fuera de esta tendencia, tal y como demuestra un rápido vistazo a algunas de las obras maestras del siglo. Muchos de esos cuadros o esculturas que hoy tenemos por imprescindibles hubieran sido tirados directamente a la basura sólo medio siglo antes.
